The Calgary Foundation annual report is distributed every year to a highly engaged audience of corporate and individual donors who read it very thoroughly. Their generous donations flow millions of dollars into every corner of Calgary, supporting a myriad of causes. For donors, the annual report should demonstrate how their money is being spent as well as the value of building a more inclusive community. But 2021 wasn’t an ordinary year by any stretch. With the discovery of hundreds of unmarked graves at former residential school sites across the country, Canadians had to acknowledge and reconcile their dark history of mistreating Indigenous peoples.

The calls for racial equality had never been LOUDER.

In response to these calls, the Calgary Foundation challenged readers of its 2021 annual report to undertake a perspective shift. Because it’s only when we can see things from a different point of view that we can truly feel compassion for others. To do this, each one of our spreads experimented with type scale, orientation, and texture — symbolizing the different perspectives found throughout Calgary.
